The other day I walked into this cool bookstore/cafe/bar that I work from every now and then. It’s a building originally built in the 1600s, on a corner with three other buildings built in the 1600’s. It’s a really great space that plays great music and has coffee in the morning and beer (well… also in the morning if you’re so inclined).
It’s a place that makes you feel like you’re a part of something bigger.
So I walked in and grabbed a table and a woman made purposeful eye contact. She mentioned that she knows me but not sure how. We determined that she’s just seen me in various cafes here in town and that she knew I was in the web industry.
I explained that I owned a small agency and she said: “I do websites too”. Her body language told me that she thought of herself as not quite where I was – which is ok with me, but she seemed embarrassed by that.
She started talking about a Meetup for web designers, developers and agencies here in town and wanted to know why I’ve never been. I mentioned that I should, and maybe I could talk about the processes I use (and help teach) as part of a coaching system I am a member of.
She started describing who attends and how she just simply can’t believe it because there are people in there that actually charge $15,000 for a website – “can you imagine?” And of course, that such people would have no use for a coaching program.
“Um, yes. I don’t work cheaply either, so yeah – I can easily imagine.” And I proceeded to tell her that many of the members of this community I belong to are doing websites for $15K or more.
It was simply beyond her comprehension that it was possible.
The conversation went like this:
Her: “Who in the world will pay that much for a website”?
Me: “Lots of people”
Her: “You mean ‘Enterprise’ and large companies down in NYC of course – not around HERE”!
Me: “I’m doing a site for a lawyer about two blocks from here for over $10K and then a few hundred a month once launched”
Her: “Well what do you do for design – it must be REALLY high-end graphic design and branding”
Me: “Nope, not really. We designed it in-house – nothing fancy at all. Lots of photos that match their target audience pain points, lots of content that they wrote that talks to those pain points – and we had to embed a calculator that they already had us build a few years back for their old site – nothing fancy or hard at all”
She was dumbfounded.
I then told her that I am building something to attract HVAC companies, and the plan is they will pay me about $1,200 per month for a very simple website as long as I can make their phone ring. She was floored.
I told her to give me her card and I might send clients I don’t want to her. She did. And as she did, she said:
I’ll pretty much do anything
Oh well.
I think now that I have been through this program, and been even teaching it a bit, it’s become so obvious to me that there are indeed clients out there who value what we do.
It is, as I told her, not about a pretty website necessarily. It’s about a website that speaks to the target audience, and it’s about YOU talking to YOUR audience about how to best do that with a website.
There was a post in the Agency Mavericks Facebook group recently that asked if the Life Coaching industry was a good niche – and SO MANY PEOPLE commented that it was not because they don’t have any money.
This is DEAD wrong.
There are coaches that do not have money. There are attorneys that do not have money. There are people and businesses in every industry that do not have money. THESE ARE NOT YOUR CLIENTS.
There ARE ALSO businesses and people in each and every industry that DO have money and DO value your expertise and DO understand that you are the professional and DO know that they need you to do your job so they can succeed.
Stop limiting yourself by thinking small and thereby attracting small. If you think big, you will attract big.
We like to talk about mindset here at Agency Mavericks because really, that's the first obstacle on the road to running a profitable business. If you need our help to get through your roadblocks, then jump on a call with one of our team members and we'll see how we can help!
