Number forty-one: Get content first
Good day, I'm Troy Dean from Video User Manuals and Agency Mavericks. And this is the 101 Ways to Elevate Yourself and Demand Higher Fees: a Practical Guide for Word Press Consultants to Start Attracting Better Quality Clients, Work on Better, More Interesting Projects and Get Paid Better Fees. Now, let's go elevate!
Number 41: Get Content First. I cannot tell you how many times I've had this conversation with Word Press developers and consultants about how frustrating it is getting content from clients now that we have a website designed, we have our theme installed, Word Press is up and running and we have all these holes in the website because the client hasn't finished with their content.
Now, Andy Clark, from Stuff and Nonsense, has been on about this for years. His concept is designing from the inside out and it's all about getting content first and then designing a solution based on the content that you have collected.
I guess the big thing for me here, the big takeaway is how do we know what to design unless we've got the content?
And one of the big problems we have with getting content is that clients don't know how to write the content and there doesn't seem to be anywhere well organized that we can keep the content.
I use Gather Content.com. There should be a link somewhere under these show notes to Gather Content. I use GatherContent.com. And I educated my clients about the importance of getting me all of their content before we design a website because I don't know what to design until I've seen the content that they have.
So instead of building a website with a home page slider and some, you know, call out panels on the home page and then fighting with the client to get content out of them to fill those holes in, get the content first and then start designing websites once you've got the content. It will differentiate you from everyone else and it will make your life a lot easier moving forward.
So Number 41 is get the content first, and use GatherContent.com to organize the content from the client. In the next video I'm going to introduce you to a little tool that will help you design websites in the browser. Until then, go elevate.
