Number eighteen: Claim Superpowers
Good day, I'm Troy Dean from Video User Manuals and Agency Mavericks and this is the 101 Ways to Elevate Yourself and Demand Higher Fees, a practical guide for WordPress consultants to start attracting better quality clients, work on better, more interesting projects, and get paid better fees. Now, let's go elevate.
Number 18, claim superpowers. So, I'm a big fan of this one and I like to do this in a very lighthearted tongue-in-cheek kind of way, but I, at some point in the initial client meeting, I say to my new lead, “Tell me something, what superpower do you think I'd bring to this project? Why me? Why are you talking to me about this?” And they will start telling you what superpowers they think you have. And we use the word “superpowers” with a, as I said, a bit of tongue-in-cheek, lighthearted humor. But if I said things like, “Well, you know, you understand the technology, you know, you know how websites work, you obviously know more about this than we do, you know how to write the code and you know how to, you know, get it to talk to Google and do all that kind of stuff.” Once they start assigning super powers to you, it's then very hard later on for them to try to negotiate on price or ask for a discount because they've admitted to themselves that you have superpowers.
So, I know it's a bit of a funny play on language, but the more you can get them to admit to themselves and verbalize it and admit to you the superpowers that you have and why they are asking you to help them with this project and why they're not just doing it themselves or doing it internally, because they don't have the skills. They don't have the knowledge and the experience to do that, then the less chance they'll negotiate on price later on because, when was the last time you asked a superhero for a discount? Never.
Okay, in the next episode, I'm going to tell you the one thing that you should give a client in the initial client meeting. Until then, go elevate.
