Number fifteen: Dress Well
Good day, I'm Troy Dean from Video User Manuals and Agency Mavericks and this is the 101 Ways To Elevate Yourself and Demand Higher Fees, a practical guide for WordPress consultants to start attracting better quality clients, work on better, more interesting projects, and get paid better fees. Now let's go elevate.
Number 15, dress well. And I know that sounds really obvious. In fact, I can't believe I've even made a point of this, but I have seen WordPress consultants turn up to client meetings where the client has indicated where they do have some budget to spend. I have seen WordPress consultants turn up in what I would consider less-than-desirable attire. Now I don't think we all need to wear suits. I don't think we all need to wear funky, expensive brands. But I do think there are some things that are off the charts. I would never turn up to a meeting in shorts. I don't care how hot it is. I just wouldn't wear shorts, I wouldn't wear flip flops or thongs, I wouldn't wear a singlet or a tank top.
I, personally, would always wear nice dress jeans and a collared shirt and some nice shoes. Again, I don't wear a tie, I don't wear a suit. I dress to let the client know that I'm serious about what I do. I haven't just rolled out of bed, but I've actually taken some time to make myself present well. I care about their business. I understand that there's money involved and I respect the fact that they're professionals and I'm a professional, so I dress accordingly. Again, I know this sounds really obvious but I've seen this happen so I thought it was worth addressing.
The better you dress, by the way, the more chance the client has got of perceiving you as someone who is successful and someone who is in business, not someone is just designing websites in their bedroom in their pajamas and can come out and have a coffee with them anytime they like. So it's a positioning and a perception exercise. Dress well.
And, in the next episode I'm going to reveal what you should not talk about in the first client meeting that you have with your new prospect. So look forward to that. Until then, go elevate.
